George was part of the 456 Bomb Group and flew for the 15th Air Force out of Foggia-Cherignola, Italy.  He served as a navigator/bombardier on a B-24 bomber.  On his seventh bombing mission, his plane was shot down over Hungary.  He parachuted out, was captured by the Germans, and spend the last eight months of the war in Europe as a POW.  He was liberated by General George Patton, who rode through his prison camp on a tank.
