Sargeant Leary was stationed in Vietnam from February 1967 to February 1968. He rotated home a week after the TET offensive. As a forward observer for a mortar platoon, his field time was spent in the An Lao Valley (Central Highlands – “2 corps”).

His unit was involved in Operation Pershing, the intent of which was to drive North Vietnamese Army units out of the valley which was a major rice growing area.

James Leary is the 3rd generation to serve the U.S. His grandfather, Jeremiah Leary served in the Spanish American War, and then his father, James Chase Leary, in WWII.
